Fortune Sacco hold off Shabana to go third

Fortune Sacco held off a late Shabana onslaught to win 1-0 at Awendo Green Stadium in their Sunday afternoon National Super League clash where both teams struggled to convert the few chances created.

Talisman Robert Mutua scored the game decider in the 63rd minute after being set through on goal by John Musikhu following the Shabana rearguard’s sluggish defending.
The game kicked off with Shabana skipper Fred Nyakundi being booked after kicking away the ball after being flagged offside.
Moments later Shabana’s trickster Mohammed Koulibally failed to convert the home side’s early chance when he fired inches wide following an excellent build up play from down the the right flank.
The visitors replied back with Mutua flicking the ball over the Shabana defense but point man Babu Kisayi could not master the right balance to aim properly at goal.
The duo was at it again at the half-hour mark this time Kisayi shooting inches wide following a sumptuous through pass from danger man Mutua.
Shabana’s clear-cut chance came in the dying minutes of the first half when Momanyi controlled the ball with his chest before unleashing a ferocious thunderbolt that flew inches above the crossbar much to the disappointment of an already animated home fans.
The visitors had to deal with an injury scare towards the break when their midfield maestro Robert Mutua walked off the pitch to receive treatment after a lunging tackle from Roney Omondi.
He however overcame that setback to return in the second half and was a constant menace for the Shabana rearguard for the better part of the second-half.
Fortune Sacco caretaker manager Sylvester Godwin was all praises for his charges display terming it as a show of intent and a vindication of their contender credentials.
“Am proud of every player today for the have done a good job. We want to be among the best three teams at the end of the season,” he said.
Shabana team manager Elijah Sani rued his team’s profligacy in front of goal for their failure to win their second consecutive game.
“This was a bad day in office and we will have to win our next game against Talanta to keep alive our chances of contesting for the title.”
The glamour boys face a Herculean task of felling on-form Talanta next week in their bid to return to the leading lot on the NSL log.
