Gaspo look to tighten grip on KWPL title

Gaspo Women FC manager Vivian ‘Komullo’ Akinyi has implored upon her charges to keep their momentum in the Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL) as the race for the title hots up.

Gaspo who edged Trans Nzoia Falcons 3-1 at the weekend tops the league standings courtesy of a superior goal difference against Vihiga Queens who are second on the log with similar points.

With the league nearing its end, Akinyi says her side has what it takes to win the title despite the tough competition at the top of the table.

“The only advice I can give my team is not to give up. We are remaining with very few matches and I don’t see any reason for us not to emerge victorious. I congratulate everyone in the team for yesterday's win against Trans Nzoia and it has given the team morale boost going to the next fixture against Bunyore Starlets.” Said Akinyi who is a twin sister to defender Sharon Aluoch.

With a Caf Champion League slot up for grabs, Akinyi said the stakes are much higher for her side who recently hired experienced tactician Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee.

“We have the best coach in the country and since his arrival a few weeks ago, he has been very instrumental to the team. We will continue giving him support and I’m sure we shall win the league, conquer the Cecafa Club Championship and qualify for the third edition of Caf Women’s Champions League which is our main agenda now” she added.

Akinyi rose to the Managerial role at the club five months ago after replacing the current chairman Edward Githua.

Meanwhile, struggling Kayole Starlets fell 1-0 in the hands of Nakuru City Queens at the Camp Toyoyo grounds while  Vihiga Queens won with the same margin against Bunyore Starlets at Mumias Sports Complex.

On Saturday, Ulinzi Starlets maintained their third position on the log with 32 points following a huge 3-0 win against the defending Champions Thika Queens while Benard Kitolo coached side Zetech Sparks humbled Kangemi Ladies 10-0.

Nakuru City Queens are fourth on the log with 31 points while Mumias- based Wadadia rounds up the top five with 29 points.
