Gitau out to fix leaky Pipeline

Despite losing a number of their top players after the conclusion of last year’s National League season, former African women’s volleyball powerhouse Kenya Pipeline is rebuilding in earnest ahead of the 2020 campaign.

Head coach, Paul Gitau, appointed earlier in the year to lead the African bronze medalists is optimistic of coming up with one of the best squads in Kenya’s women volleyball.

“No player is born a superstar; all of them are made, I’ m in the team to build a reputable squad. For now there is no way we can sign until the end of the season of which we don’t even know when it will start or end,” he said. “What I’m doing is to develop the current squad by changing their positions so that they can play high level volleyball as most of them are from school, and school games are totally different from league competitions.”

Gitau says the little time he’s had with the team before the Coving 19 pandemic struck and brought everything to a halt will not affect the early preparation that he had planned.

“I didn’t have enough time before Corona struck, but we all know we lost seven of our best to KCB and now I have a totally new team made up of girls, mostly from school, so this is a team that needs a lot of attention,” he added.

He went on:  “If the league resumes we will be ready for the challenge because I have been following their training but I would ask for a little more time after the corona dust settles in order to prepare the team as I would have wished.”

He says the girls receive a weekly training program of which they are working on alone, but monitored online by the coaching staff.

Kenya Pipeline are six-time African champions and have managed a third place finish in the last two years.
