World
marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge says having the right systems in place
helped him to break his own world record in Berlin clocking two hours, one
minute and nine seconds beating his 2018 record by 30 seconds.
Speaking
to NTV Sport on Monday, Kipchoge said setting goals and having the right
systems in place to realise them is the only way to achieve long term success
in athletics.
“I always had goals but according to me and my
team, systems are very important, goals will solve a problem temporarily but systems
solve problems forever. Thus I was purely on the right systems that’s why I
broke the world record,” said Kipchoge.
The
double Olympic champion also insisted on the importance of being in the right
state of mind heading to major races saying it has contributed immensely to success
in his athletics career that spans over two decades
“Pressure
is always there but I tell athletes and the public to handle pressure in the
right way. It (pressure) can come in a negative and positive way and if you
understand where the pressure is coming from then you will be able to handle it
in the right way,”added Kipchoge.
Being
the first man to run a marathon under two hours when he clocked 1:59:41 during
the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Austria in 2019, Kipchoge rates that achievement as
the biggest moment of his career.
“INEOS 1:59 challenge was critical in my heart
because I made history and records are there to be broken but I don’t think if
there was any man out there who dare to make history like I did that is why it
will remain special even if other people will break it in future,” Kipchoge
told Spot On on NTV.
