Gor Mahia FC fought back to earn a point from their 1-1 draw against Sofapaka FC during Saturday's FKF Premier League season opening clash at the Kasarani Stadium.

Darius Msagha scored the opening goal for Sofapaka on the stroke of half time and Gor hit back late on through Benson Omalla's penalty after a series of dramatic moments in the dying minutes.

Gor's best opening chance came in the sixth minute via Austin Odhiambo who beat his man and fired at goal but goalkeeper Jacob Osano kept it out with his right foot.

They came knocking again shortly after when John Macharia won the ball in the opposition third and slipped it into the path of Benson Omalla.

The striker could not bring the ball under his control but it still fell beautifully for Odhiambo whose initial effort was parried back into play before a second attempt was blocked by defender Simon Munala.

Gor continued to apply the pressure but the Sofapaka defence held firm with Osano pulling some brilliant stops to keep the game at 0-0.

Sofapaka had barely managed to muster a dangerous attack but it was the Batoto ba Mungu that finally broke the deadlock just before the break.

A well measured corner was swung into the danger area, inviting bodies in the Gor box and a chaotic attempt to clear the ball by ended up in the back of the net through Darius Msagha as Sofapaka led 1-0 at half time.

Gor continued to dominate the ball as the game restarted for the second half but lacked bite with their attacking with Omalla often left isolated out in front.

The champions were almost punished again with Osano guilty this time round after he was caught by Fiston Razak attempting a needless dribble just on the edge of his penalty area.

Razak appeared to have won the ball before he was quickly brought down Osano with a rash challenge.

The referee allowed play to continue amid wild protests from the visiting technical bench led by head coach Francis Haringingo with Razak down in a heap.

Gor finally got their equalizer five minutes from time and it came from a penalty converted by Omalla.

The champions nearly conceded immediately after but survived thanks to a last ditch tackle from Joshua Onyango.

Gor also had a late opportunity on the other end but Boniface Omondi could not execute his chipped effort with the goalkeeper off his line.
