Gor keeper Mathews eyeing Stars call-up

Gor Mahia FC goalkeeper Gad Mathews Otieno is hoping his superb form will earn him a first call-up to the national team.

Otieno, whose heroics steered Gor to clinching the FKF Cup title, says all he needs is an opportunity from the Harambee Stars head coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee.

“A call-up for the national team is my wish but all I put my trust in God. Everyone is watching, the results will come and when I will be called upon I’ll do my best and also deliver the results,” Otieno said.

The former Wazito FC and Kariobangi Sharks custodian saved two penalties against AFC Leopards in the final on July 4 at the Nyayo National stadium as Gor sealed a CAF Confederation Cup ticket.

He also pulled a man of the match performance in the Cup semis against a Bidco United in June, saving a Zacharia Gathu penalty at Ruaraka grounds.

He is now aiming to win the goalkeeper of the season award as well as help Gor to lift the league title to an record-stretching 20th time.

“My satisfaction will actually be achieved through; being the winners of the league and also winning the goalkeeper of the season award,” Otieno said.

So far, Mathews has kept eight clean sheets which puts him in fifth behind Ulinzi Stars James Saruni-11, KCB’s Okoth Ken-10, AFC Leopards’ Benjamin Ochan-9 and Bandari’s Justin Ndikumana-8.

Otieno-25- joined the league defending champions in 2020 July from Wazito FC and his prowess in between the sticks has enabled him to be a regular at the expense of veteran Boniface Oluoch.

Gor sit fourth on the 17-teams standings with 39 points, 12 behind leaders Tusker with only nine matches on the cards to play for.
