Gor, Leopards share derby spoils as Tusker down Homeboyz

Gor Mahia FC hit back in the second half to draw AFC Leopards 1-1 at the Kasarani Stadium on Sunday as honours were shared at the Mashemeji derby graced by President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM leader Raila Odinga, Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed and a host of other government officials.

Victor Omune had put Leopards 1-0 up at half time and the hosts pulled level through Benson Omalla to keep their six-year FKF Premier League unbeaten derby streak intact.

Elsewhere, the race for the title race was left on a knife after Tusker FC defeated Kakamega Homeboyz 2-0 to trim the leaders' advantage down to just one point with five games to go until the end of the season.

The result in Ruaraka means Homeboyz have now seen what appeared to be an unassailable 10-point lead at the summit whittle down to just one with goals from Ibrahim Joshua and Deogratious Ojok responsible for their latest reverse.

In the 94th Mashemeji Derby, Leopards went ahead in the 28th minute with Omune quickly pouncing on a brilliant cross from Peter Thiong'o to put the ball past goalkeeper Gad Mathews and send the fans in white and blue wild.

Leopards had a clear chance through Omune prior to his goal after Cliff Nyakeya's fantastic cross found him in the box but it went begging.

Gor's first real attempt came via Joshua Onyango who headed home but his effort was cancelled for offside. They stepped up their push for the equaliser with Benson Ochieng testing Elvis Opiyo with a stinging shot but the goalkeeper parried it to safety.

Opiyo continued his goalkeeping heroics with another superb save to deny Austin Odhiambo as Leopards preserved their lead into half time.

Shortly after restart, substitute Onyango Samuel tried from long-range but Leopards' man of the match Opiyo was positioned well to deal with the scare.

Thiong'o who was full of mistakes on the right wing could have gifted the hosts a winning goal with his mistakes forcing Opiyo into a wonderful save from Omalla's threat.

Samuel Onyango saw his shot hit the woodwork with two minutes remaining and had a second effort stopped by Opiyo on the touch line.
