Akonnor, who had faced pressure in December, engineered a turnaround that saw the record league champions go unbeaten in six matches with five victories and one draw last month.
“January was demanding, but the players responded well to our ideas,” he noted. “We are building something, and this is further testament that the work the technical team is doing is taking shape.”
Ochuoga’s five goal involvements from the backline earned him the league’s top individual recognition and he says he is proud of his performances so far.
“This award means a lot to me because it reflects the work we put in as a team,” said Ochuoga. “I dedicate it to my coaches, teammates, and the fans who push us to be and remain the best in such a competitive league.”
The duo’s awards reflected the team’s dominance over six matches. Gor Mahia scored 15 goals and conceded only four, keeping three clean sheets and posting the best win rate in the league during the month.
The campaign began emphatically on January 6 with a 4–1 dismantling of Kariobangi Sharks.
A 0–0 draw away at Shabana FC was the only minor pause before the team shifted up a gear. K’Ogalo edged Murang’a SEAL 3–2 in a spirited home contest, brushed aside Mara Sugar 3–0, secured a hard-fought 2–1 win over Bidco United, and closed the month with a commanding 3–0 victory against Sofapaka.
These results opened a four-point cushion at the top of the table, but rivals remain within striking distance.
January was not just about wins—it was a statement that Gor Mahia are rediscovering their title-winning form.
Looking ahead, Akonnor and Ochuoga will aim to carry the momentum into a challenging February schedule.
Gor Mahia travel to Kericho Green Stadium to face APS Bomet on February 15, host KCB FC at Kasarani on February 20, and meet Posta Rangers at Nyayo Stadium five days later.
