Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia will play a select team from the four counties of the larger Nyanza region, in a friendly match on Saturday afternoon.

The select team dubbed ‘Nyanza Combined’ was picked from Eliud Owalo Super Cup tournament which ended Thursday afternoon, with Homa Bay edging Kisumu 4-2 on post-match penalties following a barren draw in regulation time.

The match will be played at Nyilima Sports Ground in Asembo, Siaya County beginning at 3:00pm.

Gor will be warming up for round 17 of the Kenyan Premier League against Posta Rangers on January 6, 2024.

Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo, the sponsor of the tournament which bore the Nyanza Combined team, is looking forward to the match, which will test the Nyanza raw talents against the biggest football club in Kenya.

‘’We have finally settled on the finest from four Counties across Nyanza. We had a select Committee that was mandated to pick on the best player in every position from all the participating teams and we finally have a combined team to face Gor.

‘’The main aim of this tournament was to expose the hidden talent in the regions. We were so impressed with the undiscovered talents displayed and we are hopeful most of the boys will get a chance to join bigger teams locally and perhaps abroad.’’

He added: ‘’Considering the importance of the tournament, we are contemplating making it an annual event so as to keep our talented youth exposed to local and international football scouts,’’ added Owalo

Homa Bay combined bagged Sh. 400,000 while runners up Kisumu pocketed Sh. 300,000 after Thursday’s final. Siaya, who finished third walked away with Sh. 200,000 while Migori was awarded Sh. 100,000.

The select technical committee coordinating the tournament was mandated to pick on the best players throughout, and comprised former Gor Mahia players Tobias ‘Jua Kali’ Ochola, James Goro Oronge, Gerald Omolo ‘Chonjo’ and Peter Dawo.
