League leaders Gor Mahia staged a thrilling second-half comeback to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over Bidco United at Kasarani Stadium on Saturday, extending their lead at the summit of the FKF Premier League to three points.
The Thika-based Bidco United defied expectations in the
first half, taking a deserved lead in the 26th minute through a commanding
header. They controlled the tempo for much of the opening period, entering the
break with a well-earned 1-0 advantage.
Determined to shift the momentum, Gor Mahia’s head coach,
Charles Akonnor, made two swift substitutions at the start of the second half,
introducing defender Frank Odhiambo and striker Ebenezer Assifuah.
The move paid immediate dividends as Assifuah leveled the
score in the 62nd minute with a sharp finish, galvanizing the home side.
K’Ogalo dominated possession thereafter, pinning Bidco deep
in their own half. Despite relentless pressure, a winner seemed elusive until
the final moments of stoppage time.
In a dramatic twist, midfielder Enock Morrison’s dangerous
free-kick into the box sparked a defensive scramble. The ball fell to
substitute Paul Ochuoga, who fired a neat finish into the roof of the net,
sealing a spectacular turnaround in the ninth minute of added time.
A jubilant Coach Akonnor praised his team’s resilience: “The
belief, the style of play, and the mentality, they never stopped playing even
when down. They’ve shown they are ready for any battle,” he remarked.
His counterpart, Antony Akhulia, expressed frustration over
the extended stoppage time and what he perceived as lopsided officiating.
“We held back and allowed them to bulldoze the game in the
second half. I don’t understand the nine added minutes… sometimes against these
big teams, they get advantages you don’t,” Akhulia stated, though he conceded
his side committed unnecessary fouls that led to pressure.
The victory reinforces Gor Mahia’s title credentials as they
continue their pursuit of the championship as they stay top of the table on 36
point after 17 games.
