Gor target second place after underwhelming season

Gor Mahia are aiming to finish second in the FKF Premier League after acknowledging the title might be beyond them with five matches to go, goalkeeper Gad Mathews Otieno has said.

The record champions sit fifth on the league standings with 47 points, nine adrift the leaders Kakamega Homeboyz.

“The matches remaining, focus now shifts to next season but also we have to put in a lot of effort to at least get a top two finish if not to lift the title because Tusker won their match today and so we have to do our best.

"In our remaining matches we must win all of them to finish at the top of the log,” Gad said.

Gor's bid to reclaim the league title has been derailed by inconsistencies in performance and FIFA transfer ban that meant they had to rely heavily on their youth team to boost their squad.

Financial challenges have also troubled the club with players often going months without salaries while the technical bench has also been changed every now and then due to poor results.

“Things have not been easy on the side of the office since we have had our ups and downs especially because of the coronavirus pandemic that twisted us a lot.

"Since we also had a ban on the recruitment we turned to our youth team bringing in youthful players whom some have done their best and others are still catching up,” Gad added.
