Gor to return Friday after CAF Cup loss at Petro Atletico

Gor Mahia FC will fly back to the country on Friday following their 2-1 CAF Confederation Cup loss to Petro Atletico in Luanda, Angola on Wednesday night.

The Kenyan champions were scheduled to return on Thursday but Team Manager Jolawi Obondo told Citizen Digital they ran into ‘complications’ that forced them to travel a day later.

First half goals from Toni Rosa Ribiero and Manguxi Quiberto set up the victory for Petro Atletico with Nicholas Kipkirui striking late as the Angolans denied Gor the chance to go top of their group.

The end of Matchday Two saw Hussein Dey seize leadership of Pool D after the Algerian outfit fought back to secure a 1-1 draw away at Zamalek SC in Cairo, Egypt.

Hussein Dey have four points, just one clear of Gor who lead Petro Atletico only on goal difference with the Egyptian giants Zamalek sitting bottom with just one point.

Gor face a congested 10-day schedule that will see them host Hussein Dey at the end of it  on February 24 but two league clashes against Sofapaka FC and Western Stima in between.

Just as last year, Gor Mahia led their groupin this competition unto the last match day when they squandered their group leadership after falling to USM Alger in Algiers hence finishing third after USM and Rwandese Rayon Sport.

‘’This time round we are determined and are optimistic of making to the last eight’’.

These were team manager Jolawi Obondo’s words shortly before departure to Angola. But a section of Gor Mahia fans on social media think something needs to be done to the goalkeeping and the striking force.

One such fan Phelix Ouma wrote on Ramogi facebook page, ‘’Pek ni e Keeper gi striking force tena wach mar keto Blackberry gi Onyango e bench duokowa chien, game dwaro speed gi counter’’.

In their next match, suspended players Jacques Tuyisenge and Philemon Otieno will now be available for selection alongside Dennis Oliech.

They will only rest tomorrow before resorting to KPL match against Sofapaka on Saturday. They are currently placed 4th in the local League at 22 points with two matches at hand.
