Grieving Muhuri Muchiri sink Khamisi, dedicate win to fallen Mokua

The 2017 Rugby Sevens East African champions Muhuri Muchiri stood tall against Khamisi of Coast to win 27-0 despite the untimely demise of Daniel Mokua, a 17-year old player who drowned in the Neptune Beach, Mombasa on the eve of the National Term One School Games.

After the opening win at Shimo La Tewa grounds, the 2019 Nairobi region runners up led by coach John Mudachi came out on the field carrying the number 10 jersey belonged to Mokua who played as half back in the team.

In a post –match reflection, Mudachi and his charges dedicated the win to the deceased player while also shifting focus on the next match where they face Agoro from Nyanza in their second match from 12:00pm.

“A good win from my boys despite the loss of our brother Mokua and now we want to continue winning our next matches in remembrance of him. We now aim the title because we must win it for him,” he underscored.

Elsewhere, the sevens version defending champions Laiser Hill of Rift Valley got off to a flying start in their quest to retain their title defeating Chianda from Nyanza by 21-0 points.

Muvuti of Eastern region defeated St.Mary’s of Coast by a resounding 27-0 win while 2015 champions St.Peters from Western underlined their intention of reclaiming their title by downing Agoro from Nyanza by 21-12.

In 15s version contest, 2014 East Africa champions Maseno were off the mark after claiming a 14-0 win against Kwale in their opening match as Nairobi region champions Dagoretti defeated Alliance of Central 13 -5.

Eastern region, Kangaru started on right footing thrashing Galana of Coast 34-0 as they eye this year’s title which has eluded them since 2013.Western region rugby power house Kakamega defeated Kabianga of Rift Valley by 27-9.

In basketball boys, defending champions Laiser hill began their title defence with a 82-33 win against Aga Khan while Alliance defeated Darul from North Eastern by 77-17.

In girls’ contest, defending champions Kaya Tiwi started on high note winning 110-29 against Mua of Machakos.
