Defending Champions General Service Unit (GSU) secured a
much needed victory as they whitewashed newbies Trail Blazers 3-0 (27-25,
25-20, 25-14) to edge closer to defending their title in the ongoing Kenya
Volleyball Federation men's League playoffs at Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi.
Trail Blazers put in an outstanding performance to force GSU
into extra play of the first set after tying 25-25 but it was the defending
champions who stood out and won the set giving them the authority to control
the subsequent sets.
The win left GSU edging closer to the title after garnering
six points and sitting comfortably on the top of the log.
GSU's head coach Gideon Tarrus hailed his charges for
remaining focused and affirmed he was looking forward to defending his title.
"I want to thank my boys because they heeded to
yesterday's advice and corrected our mistakes today. I am happy it worked and
we hope tomorrow it will also work against KPA. I don't have pressure and I
know we will win," said Tarrus.
Later in the day former champions Kenya Prisons' chances of
securing the title this season were burried as they were put to sword by Kenya
Ports Authority (KPA) who clobbered them 3-1.
Kenya Prisons had a bright start winning the first set 25-23
but crumbled to pressure losing the subsequent sets 25- 16, 25-19 and 25-11 to
end their title dreams.
Kenya Prisons head coach David Lung'aho expressed his
displeasure with today's performance but promised to come back stronger next
season.
"KPA easily won the match, we had a bright start but
then our poor reception of the balls gave them a chance to whip us. We have
lost the title but we will ensure we win our last match to finish third."
His counterpart Sammy Mulinge was overjoyed by his boy’s
performance promised to give their all against GSU.
"We have a difficult match tomorrow because of GSU's
quality but it is the only opportunity we have to try and win the title. We
will go into the game with a target of winning the title," noted Mulinge.
GSU leads the round robin format playoffs league with six
points while KPA sits second on five points. Trail Blazers are third with a
point while GSU comes last without a point with one game to play.
The climactic finale of the playoffs will see Kenya Prisons
lock horns with Trail Blazers while KPA will go head to head with GSU in a
title decider clash on third and final day of the league playoffs on Sunday.
