Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia shot-stopper Bryne Omondi has been crowned the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Sports Personality of the Month for August 2025, capping off a stellar year for the rising goalkeeper.
Omondi, who joined Gor Mahia from coastal side Bandari FC, earned the honour following his heroic performances at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), where Harambee Stars reached a historic quarterfinal in their maiden appearance at the continental showpiece.
The gifted custodian delivered multiple Man of the Match displays, anchoring Kenya’s resilient charge through the so-called “group of death.” The Stars stunned two-time champions DR Congo, edged Zambia, and held Angola, before pulling off a famous win over Morocco’s Atlas Lions to storm into the last eight.
Receiving his award — a 65-inch LG television and a personalized trophy — Omondi beamed with gratitude, saying the recognition reflected collective effort.
"It was a momentous occasion for me and the entire team. We wanted to prove that we can carry the national team badge with pride, and we did exactly that,” Omondi said.
"You've also seen that the tournament was also an opportunity for some of us to advance our careers ,playing abroad which is quite commendable and encouraging," he added.
He credited the team’s mental fortitude and President William Ruto’s rewards package for inspiring them to punch above their weight.
“The President’s rewards plus the team belief under the guidance of Coach Benni McCarthy really motivated us during the group stage. Knowing the whole nation was behind us gave us extra energy,” he noted.
Reflecting on the toughest clash, Omondi singled out the win against Morocco’s Atlas Lions.
“That was the hardest match of my career. But by sticking to Coach Benny McCarthy’s plan and believing in each other, we conquered them,” he recalled.
With the Kenya Premier League 2025/26 season kicking off in four days on Friday, September 19, Omondi has now shifted his focus to club duty with record league champions Gor Mahia.
“I know the pressure that comes with playing for Gor Mahia. I’m ready for it, and my goal is to help the team win silverware this season,” he affirmed.
Omondi also expressed excitement about the
prospect of playing in the season’s first Mashemeji Derby, a stage he hopes
will further showcase his talent.
