Homeboyz set for nervy final push as Tusker, Bandari wait to pounce
The battle for the FKF Premier League title looks set to go
down to the wire with Kakamega Homeboyz, Tusker FC and Bandari all vying to be
crowned champions at the end of the season.
A three-point advantage at the summit means the title is
Hoemboyz’ to lose with four matches to go but their closest challengers Tusker and
Bandari are on the wings waiting to swoop.
The league looked all wrapped up for Homeboyz a few weeks
ago but a horrible run in April saw the leaders blow a ten-point lead to allow
the chasing pack back into the race.
A scary run-in to the end of the season will see Homeboyz
face record champions Gor Mahia FC and AFC Leopards in back-to-back games
before meetings with FC Talanta and Kariobangi Sharks.
They defeated KCB last weekend, a win which was important
for coach Bernard Mwalala and his boys who had gone for over 50 days without a
win.
"We have been yearning for a win and it has come at a
better time and we hope to finish strong. We have not completed the task but we
urged our fans to rally behind us and get the work done," Mwalala said.
The defending champions Tusker FC dropped points last
weekend when they were held to a barren draw by Nairobi City Stars and brought
back Homeboyz in the race.
The Robert Matano coached side will now count on Gor and Leopards
to beat Homeboyz for them to get an easy path to their title defending.
But they should first win their last three matches against
Nzoia Sugar, Bidco United and Posta Rangers and hope their rivals drop points.
Tusker have remained with only three matches as they were to
face Mathare in their fourth fixture.
At the Coastal part of the country, Bandari also revived
their thirsty for the league title since Anthony Modo Kimani took over from
Andre Casa Mbungo.
The former Harambee Stars defender has guided Bandari to
eight wins, three draw and a loss which has pushed them to the third place in
the log.
Modo has now set his focus for the remaining four matches
which he termed them as all finals.
"We will play each of the remaining four matches as a
final and then do calculation at the end of the season and see where we will
be," explained Kimani.
Bandari who also lost three points after Mathare got
relegated have collected 50 points, six behind leaders Tusker and Homeboyz but
the brewers have a superior goal difference.
The Dockers will play Sharks, Ulinzi Stars both away before
a home clash against on-form Sofapaka and their season finale will be against
Police FC.
There is no clear indication of what the winner will pocket
and also continental football hang in the balance after Harambee Stars were
left out of the AFCON 2023 qualifiers.
The curtains of the league was set for June 11 if the
transition committee will not alter anything in the fixtures.
