Humble Olunga savours Girona landmark as Kenyans shower him in praise

Kenyan international Michael Olunga tweeted a simple “God above all” in recognition of his divine inspiration following a historic performance with his LaLiga side, Girona FC on Saturday.

The mention ‘Michael Olunga’ shot top as the most discussed topic on Twitter as Kenyans flooded the micro-blogging site to pay tribute to the former Gor Mahia FC striker for becoming only the first Girona player to score a hat trick in the Spanish top flight.

That landmark meant he also became the first Kenyan player to register a LaLiga strike on a day he reminded Girona and the world how ruthless he can be at his blistering best.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, NASA leader Raila Odinga, and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama were among those who joined Kenyans in congratulating Olunga.

“Congratulations Michael Olunga for making history as the first Kenyan footballer to score a goal in the Spanish La Liga; and the first player to score a hattrick for Girona FC in the Spanish top league. Continue flying the #MagicalKenya flag high,” Uhuru wrote on his official Facebook account.

“Congratulations to Kenyan born Michael Olunga on becoming the first @GironaFC player to score a hat-trick in the Spanish #LaLigaSantander,” Odinga tweeted with Olunga saying ‘thanks a lot. I appreciate’ in his reply.

“Congratulations @OgadaOlunga more of the same brother #God’sSpeed,” his Harambee Stars captain Wanyama wrote on Twitter.

His hat-trick, scored in a 22-minute second half blitz, helped Girona demolish Las Palmas 6-0 as the Catalan-based club climbed to ninth place on the 20-team log.

Olunga, who only made a second half cameo after replacing Christian Stuani during the break, also had a hand in another goal as he slipped through Portu to score in 74th minute.

It was the 23-year-old’s first meaningful contribution to Girona since making his loan move from Zhicheng and what an impact it was.

Olunga will hope to maintain his form when Girona travel to the Wanda Metropolitana where they play LaLiga giants Atletico Madrid.
