In Kamiti Prison as in Moscow, Russia beats Saudi Arabia 5-0

Russia beat Saudi Arabia 5-0 at the opening match of the World Cup on Thursday, exactly mirroring the scoreline of a match played in Kamiti Prison.

In Thursday’s opener at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison, “Russia” beat “Saudi Arabia” 5-0.

The same score was marked up hours later by the real teams in Moscow.

“The game was good even though I peaked late,” said 23-year-old Byron Otieno, who scored two of “Russia”s five goals.

Otieno is serving life sentence for murder at the Kamiti Prison.

As part of their rehabilitation, inmates are playing their own version of the World Cup.

Teams are named after the countries competing in the World Cup with inmates watching from the sidelines.

Joseph Kirai, a volunteer, organized the 7-a-side competition with a local church.

According to him, the idea was to use the interest in the real World Cup to bring Kamiti inmates together for a positive experience.

“Our major goal is to transform the inmate through sports,” Kirai said.
