Napoli City Half Marathon bronze medalist Nancy Jepleting finished third to claim bronze in the women’s half marathon at the African Games while Kenyan men missed out on a podium finish after Panuel Mkungo placed sixth on Friday in Accra.

South Sudan’s Loliha Atalena timed 1:14.36 to win the 21km race in the women’s category ahead of Ethiopia’s Aderaw Gelaw who clocked 1:14.40 and Jepleting who settled for bronze in 1:15:07.

The 22 year-old was the only Kenyan on the start list in the women's race.

Samsom Amare clinched Eritrea’s first gold at the quadrennial event when he clocked 1:05.04 in the men’s 21km race ahead of William Amponsah (1:05:13) and Isaac Mpofu who claimed the second bronze for Zimbabwe after he timed 1:05:37.

Kenya’s Mkungo timed 1:06:30 to finish sixth while fellow countryman Peter Mwaniki did not finish the race.

Amare’s fine form continued in the Ghanaian capital two months after he won the Abu Dhabi Marathon last December.

He won with a time of 2:7.10 outpacing Kenya’s Leonard Barsoton and Turkey’s Ilham Ozbilan.

Chepleting's bronze increased Kenya's medal haul to 25 (six gold, six silver and 13 bronze).
