Jorge Campillo wins Magical Kenya Open, Mutahi impresses
Jorge
Campillo won the Magical Kenya Open with a two-shot victory, ending a
three-year winless run on the DP World Tour.
Victory on
Sunday at the Muthaiga Golf Club secured a third Tour victory for the Spaniard
who sank six birdies with a lone bogey on his way to a five-under 66.
Campillo had
finished with four straight birdies on Saturday and a similar run – four in
five - on Sunday’s front nine kept him in charge.
“It’s always
nice to win and be able to believe it all the round and close it off. It’s
always a nice feeling. It’s an even nicer feeling to win a golf tournament.
“Not much,
you can still always have a big number on a hole and lose a golf tournament. I
was trying to be focused all the way. Thank god it was a five iron off the tee,
it was such an easy tee shot,” Campillo said after the win.
Mutahi
Kibugu, the only Kenyan to make the cut, closed on 73 to leave him one under
par for the tournament.
The
22-year-old, playing in his first DP World Tour event as a professional,
provided the highlight of day two with a long birdie putt at the 18th hole to
make the cut.
“I just have
one word to describe it: surreal. All the attention I got, all the support I
got was just amazing. I can’t thank everyone enough for what they’ve done this
week.
“I’m pretty
pleased with how I played over the four days. I didn’t have my best stuff the
last three, round two and three I managed to put together a score.
“Today I
just let it go early on the back nine. But I finished strong, have my chin up
and I’m pleased with my performance,” Kibugu said post-play.
The DP World Tour heads to South Africa for back-to-back events.
