Kabarak University will represent Kenya in the East Africa University Games after clinching the ladies chess title in the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) national championship held last weekend.

The tournament brought together 13 universities in a thrilling battle of wits at Kabarak University.

This year’s feat is a monumental leap from last year’s second-place finish in the games held at Rongo University

Team skipper Yasmin Mutheu cited thorough preparations for their envious run, adding that they will aim to defend their crown in the next edition.

“One of the reason behind our success is regular practice and training where individual players dedicate their time each day of the week to come and practice different chess theories and tactics,” she explained.

Acknowledging the role of guidance and mentorship, the captain also highlighted the invaluable support received from experienced coaches and mentors.

“We always encourage each other as we play and have a good competitive spirit.

“We also receive guidance from experienced coaches and mentors who help us sharpen and develop our skills,” said Yasmin.

After conquering the local scene, Kabarak will represent Kenya in the East Africa University Games at Kenyatta University in June.
