Kakamega furious after St Anthonys penalty drama

A late penalty call left Kakamega High School football team head coach Brendan Mwinamo infuriated as St. Anthony’s rallied to force a 1-1 draw at the Hills Grounds in Eldoret.

The Under-19 encounter had all the elements for an high-octane clash and Moses Mudavadi held his nerve to put away a controversial 81st minute penalty and cancel Evans Odhiambo’s opener.

The result meant both sides will wait longer before their progress into the last four is confirmed as the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) National School Games entered Day Two.

“It was not a foul but the referee decided to denie us the three points. I will raise the matter with the organizers because for sure the officials are not fair,” said Mwinamo who steered the Green Commandos into the National Super League (NSL) last year.

Mwinamo’s opposite number George Owoko defended the referee’s decision, insisting it had been the right call.

“In the second half we were the better side and we deserved that spot kick. Now we must down Kathungi tomorrow (Thursday) for us to sail through as the group leaders,” said Owoko who led his side to the finals last year losing against Upper hill in the finals.

In the Girl’s category, East Africa champions and holders Wiyeta of Coast were stunned by Kwale losing 1-0 in their second Under-19 match.

The champions were in high spirits after hitting 11-0 past Matuu on Tuesday in the opening match but fellow coastal based side silence them to keep their semi-final spot at bay.

Wiyeta must win against Arch Bishop to sail through while if Kwale beats Matuu will also make it to the ast four.

Meanwhile, three-time East Africa volleyball champions Kwanthanze of Machakos were the first team to make it to the semi finals after winning their second match against Nyakach of Nyanza on Wednesday morning.

Kwanthanze hit past Nyanza champions by 3-0 straight sets of 25-11, 25-19 and 25-16.

Under the tutelage of seasoned Justin Kigwari ,Kwanthanze which is renowned for producing potent talents will finish their preliminary matches against Central representatives Tetu on Thursday afternoon.

The seven-day event will continue on Thursday with semi finals set to be played on Friday before curtains fall on the edition on Saturday.
