Kapsabet first stop as KVF announces new season dates

Reigning Kenya Volleyball Federation Men’s National League champions GSU will launch their bid for a fifteenth record extending title next month against Vihiga Team in Kapsabet after KVF released the 2022/2023 season fixtures.

Last season’s runner up Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), who fell short in their attempt to end GSU’s five-year dominance, will open their new campaign against Mombasa Prisons on December 9 at the Kapsabet Showground.

Organising Secretary Ismail Chege said KVF published the men’s fixtures only in order to allow for the completion of the women’s current league season which was put on hold during Malkia Strikers' participation in the recently concluded World Championships in Netherlands and Poland.

“We’re trying to finish the two remaining legs for the women and then the playoffs before they start their new season. The next season for women has attracted another four teams so we will have 12 teams and that will help the league to be more competitive.”

Chege added that they will introduce a Division Two Men’s League this season after many years of running the top-tier league without promotion and relegation formats.

He says having the two men leagues run concurrently will augment and provide a wide pool of top players to feed the men’s national team, Wafalme.

“In our bid to uplift men’s volleyball in the country, we’ve decided to start a second tier league and so far it has attracted eight teams. We’re expecting to register 12 teams and this will help us actualize our plans. We intend to promote four and relegate four at the end of every season,” he added.

The fourth leg of the women’s league heads to Mombasa next weekend with reigning champions Kenya Prisons opening against Kenya Army on Friday November 11.

The Josp Barasa-coached side will also face KDF and former champions Kenya Pipeline in the three-day event.
