Kayange, Kipyegon to lead Kenya in Olympic Day celebrations

Olympic 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon and former Kenya Sevens captain Humprey Kayange will lead other Kenyan stars in marking the International Olympic Day slated for Tuesday.

The duo will be taking part in the Olympic day work out video from their respective Kenyan locations as the day will for the first time be held online due to the restrictions brought about by Covid-19 pandemic.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has brought together 23 Olympic athletes to take part in the live workout video streaming live on the IOC Instagram account @olympics from 11 am, Kenyan time, in different time zones.

It will be the largest 24-hour digital Olympic workout, escalating the efforts of over 5,000 Olympians who have engaged over 243 million people online across 50 countries through the #staystrong, #stayactive, #stayhealthy campaign.

For Kayange, this will form as part of efforts towards appealing to all athletes in view of the upcoming elections for a members’ position in the IOC athletes Commission.

At the same time, NOCK has established programs that will culminate in the celebrations of the day.

NOCK sports for all commission has been running an arts and essay competition around the theme “My Olympic Dream” from June 10-20 as part of Olympic day celebrations.

The arts competition was reserved for the ages 13 and below, while the essay competition was reserved for the ages 14–18 which was aimed at promoting the ideals of Olympism to young and prospective Olympians.

NOCK has also partnered with Kenyatta University, Departments of linguistics and Arts to judge the entries thus ensuring fairness for all with winners being rewarded with shopping vouchers for educational materials.

Olympic Day is a celebration of sport, health and was first marked in 1948.
