Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KEFWA) president James Situma says the association mostly receives grievances that revolve around players' salary default by clubs mostly from the FKF Premier League.

The former Kenyan international who also turned up for AFC Leopards, Mathare United, Tusker and Sofapaka has consequently urged clubs officials to eye more sponsors.

“We must get sponsors and attract good players from all over so as to improve the levels of our league. Without good players from other countries and lack of sponsors then it means a diluted league and this will be dangerous to our football,” Situma noted.

According to Situma, if clubs land good sponsorship deals it will ease tension between them and players on matters of payment hence less cases on KEFWA’s desk.

“Mostly they are KPL clubs that are affected with these salary arrears cases with their players. You find out that a team has refused to release a player who wants to move to another club because of some reasons which becomes an issue and a case at our desk.

“Some players leave with salary arrears just because these teams have got no sponsors and therefore they can't pay the players. These are the cases we dominantly get top handle as Kefwa.”

Situma added that, since he rose to power in 2015 he has successfully handled numerous cases leading to players’ dues payment.

“There are a lot of cases we have handled and on our part it's paramount to have these players get their rights.

There are a lot of players whose successful stories have been registered just because they came to us to complain for one or two reasons.

I don't mention their names a lot because these players will need to be employed by clubs and so it won't be easy for a club to want to sign a player who has taken another club to court,” he added.

Several clubs in the topflight have had their players go for months without pay due to financial constraints.
