Spain recovered from falling behind to complete Kenya 7s humiliation at the Rio 2016 Olympics when they beat Shujaa 12-14 in their classification at the ongoing Summer Games on Wednesday night.
Shujaa thus made the undesired history of taking the first rugby wooden spoon at the Olympics. Even their sisters, Lionesses who have long lived in the shadows of their counterparts fared better by winning their classification game.
Immediately after the loss, night owls on social media took on Benjamin Ayimba’s side with some of the comments and memes that flooded the Internet not fit for publication in a family website.
While Japan who earlier beat Shujaa 31-7 in the last Pool C clash in Rio to hit the last nail in their medal hopes’ coffin, Spain simply completed the final rites.
It took a while for both sides to get into the game before Collins Injera injected a quick break and passed the ball to Samuel Oliech who gave Kenya a 5-0 lead with Biko Adema missing the conversion.
With a minute left of play in the first half remaining Spain swung three quick passes which found Marcos Poggi out wide and he accelerated away from Oscar Ouma earning Spain a lead of 7-5 at the breather.
Moments into the second half Poggi doubled his scoring tally after a beautifully weighted cross-field kick from Angel Lopez. With three minutes to go Kenya needed a score back to pressure the Spanish.
Desperate to take lead and time was on their side Oscar Ayodi bumped off the final Spanish defender and put Billy Odhiambo in for the try with the extras added with a minute to play to ignite hope.
Shujaa had one last surge up the field but in the slippery conditions, they knocked-on.
Spain gladly took possession and booted the ball out of play securing their first victory of the competition. The result sets up a ninth place play-off final between Spain and the USA.
