Kenya Cup: MMUST struggles roll on as KCB maintain lead
MMUST RFC
suffered another disappointing loss in the Kenya Cup, after going down 11-21 to
Kenya Harlequins in a match played in Kakamega over the weekend.
MMUST who are
rock bottom in the National Circuit standings have struggled to replicate the
good form they showed last season but head coach Dr. Ochieng Ahaya says there
is no need for panic as he believes good results will soon be realized.
“The match
went very well; I am not worried about the results. I can still see the team
rising from the bottom. We’ve played very well even today (Saturday) and gave a
very good account of ourselves. Harlequins is a team that’s 100 years old and I
think going by what came out, MMUST RFC is a powerhouse and they know we are
there. Whoever dismisses MMUST does so at their own peril,” Ahaya warned.
His Kenya
Harlequins counterpart Paul Murunga was excited about his team’s rich vein of form that has given the team good impetus
to hunt down playoff places.
“We have been
winning previous games and we also came for a win, and good enough we've won. We
didn’t win with a bonus but we can always build momentum from there and ensure
we get a win in our upcoming match.”
Harlequins who
showed title intent with major signings in the recent transfer window made few
changes with a few of their forwards missing the match in Kakamega.
“Big
improvement from the team as we also tried to change players because others had
to rest, especially our front rows,” he explained, “ Three of our front rows
didn’t play together with a centre but again a win is good for us so we have to
build from there. As of now we are already in the top four because we only need
to get a win and from there we need to press on and ensure we finish at play
offs.”
Murunga at the
same time urged their fans to turn up in large numbers to support the team who
recently have shown signs of returning to their mercurial best.
Elsewhere KCB
RFC showed no signs of slowing down in their pursuit of the Kenya Cup title as
they thrashed Mwamba 10-82 at Kenyatta University grounds in Nairobi.
Defending
champions Kabras Sugar hammered Nakuru 42-0 at their backyard, the Nakuru
Athletic Club while Homeboyz defeated Mean Machine 31-17.
Blak Blad
pulled a surprise win against Menengai Oilers, edging last season’s finalist
17-16 as Strathmore Leos defeated fellow university side Catholic Monks 35-15
at the Madaraka grounds.
KCB are currently sitting atop the Kenya Cup standings with 30 points, five ahead of Menengai Oilers, who are only a point ahead of Kabras Sugar. Homeboyz complete the top four with strugglers MMUST rock bottom with only two points from the six matches they have played so far.
