Kenya Pipeline face Sporting in CAVB quarters

Kenya Pipeline will face Egyptian hosts Sporting in quarter-finals of the Women’s African Club Championship following the draw held in the capital Cairo on Thursday.

The six-time continental winners are Kenya’s sole representatives at annual competition after Kenya Prisons and KCB crashed out in the preliminary stage on Wednesday.

Record champions and holders Al Ahly drew Al Shams in an all-Egyptian quarters clash while GSP of Algeria will face Customs from Nigeria. Carthage Tunisis CS versus Fap Cameron complete the last eight.

Prisons’ last eight dream was nipped on the bud by the 2014 silver medallists El Shams of Egypt after the latter won by 3-1 sets of 25-18, 25-20, 22-25 and 25-21 with the former finishing third in Pool D hence crashing out. El Shams advanced alongside 2014 winners GSP of Algeria.

At the same time, the Japheth Munala coached KCB were bundled out by the 2017 champions Carthage from Tunisia by straight sets of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-19 with the latter sailing through as the group B winners with nine points.

Sporting of Egypt also qualified to the last eight after finishing as runners up in the pool.

Meanwhile, six-time champions Kenya Pipeline who stormed to the last eight on Tuesday finished as group C winners on nine points after winning their final preliminary match by 3-1 sets against FAP of Cameroon. The latter also advanced to the quarters.

In group A, defending champions and hosts Al Ahly stayed on course on retaining their title after topping the pool with nine points without dropping any set in the process while Nigeria’s Customs sailed through as runners up.

The last eight matches will be played on Friday with semi-finals will be played on Saturday. The final is set for Monday, March 25.
