Kenya Police sink Ghana's Exchequers to win Gold Cup title

Kenya Police hockey club are winners of the Gold Cup tournament after defeating Ghana’s Exchequers 2-1 in the final held at the Dasmesh Stadium in Nairobi on Friday.

USIU finished in bronze place after defeating varsity rivals Strathmore 2-1 in the third place playoff.

The visiting Exchequers opened the scoring in the sixth minute through their captain Akaba Ekime but Brian Saina converted a penalty seven minutes to half time to level matters.

An entertaining third quarter didn’t bear fruits as both sides launched defensive tackles.

Four minutes to the final whistle, Titus Kimutai decided the tie as the hosts completed their comeback.

USIU’s Lawrence Makhatsa and Bryan Kiplimo were on target with Rawlings Sikholia finding the back of the net for Strathmore.

This was the second edition of the Gold Cup that saw only four teams register for the tournament.

All the participants were awarded participation trophies.
