Kenya Prisons storm African Championship semis in Tunisia

Five-time African champions Kenya Prisons on Monday cruised to the semi-finals of the ongoing women’s African Clubs Championship in Kelibia, Tunisia, edging Ethiopia’s Wolaita Sodo University in straight sets.

The local league champions dispatched their neighbours in sets of 25-04, 25-23 and 25-11 to advance to the semis as runners up of Pool ‘A’ on nine points, two behind leaders Sfaxien of Tunisia.

Prisons will face 2017 champions Carthage of Tunisia in the last four on Wednesday after the latter finished leaders of Pool ‘B’ with 14 points.

Tunisia league champions Sfaxien will meet Customs of Nigeria in the other semi final tie.

Prisons head coach David Lungáho said the last four encounter with the Tunisian giants is ‘where the rubber meets the road’ as they chase their first title after a eight-year hiatus.

“We’ve entered the crucial stage of this championship and we now have to show great character against Carthage who’re among the title favourites just like we’re. The squad is upbeat but I we will fine tune our skills tomorrow ahead of the semi finals,” said Lungáho, who is holding fort while Josp Barasa is away with the national women’s team currently training under a bio-secure bubble ahead of the Olympic Games.

The other Kenyan representatives, Pipeline, crashed out of the title race after they finished third in Pool ‘B’ behind Carthage and Nigeria’s Customs Services, who claimed the top two positions.

The Oilers, who lost 3-2 to the Nigerians on Sunday, needed to pick at least a point against Carthage today to sail through to the last four but ended up losing 3-0 to the Tunisian giants.

Meanwhile, KPA, who are making their maiden appearance at the continental scene, have finished fifth in the men’s category after defeating Port Doula from Cameroon 3-1 (18-25, 21-25, 25-23 20-25) in a classifications fixture.

KPA’s fellow countrymen GSU finished seventh after defeating Uganda’s Nemostar by 3-0 sets in another classification tie played in Tunisia’s capital Tunis.
