The national sevens team got their HSBC World Series off to a brilliant start as the Shujaa floored Singapore Sevens champions Canada 29-15 in Friday’s opener in Dubai.

Coach Innocent Simiyu’s charges scored five tries and made two conversions to ride past Canada who managed three unconverted tries.

Canada took an early 0-5 lead before Samuel Oliech hauled Kenya back and into a 7-5 lead in the third minute with a converted try.

Collins Injera then scored two unconverted tries in the fourth and 11th minutes to take his all-time tally to 246 and closing in on all-time leader Dan Naughton (261) of England.

Skipper Oscar Ayodi from Kakamega Homeboys also got his name on the scoresheet with a try which was converted by Oliech.

Dennis Ombachi scored unconverted try in the second half with Injera scoring the final unconverted try in the 11th minute.

Simiyu handed Kakamega Homeboyz ace Jeffery Oluoch his debut in Dubai.

Shujaa’s next pool match is against defending champions South Africa at 1.36 pm (EAT).
