Kenya to host prestigious 'Road to BAL Elite 16' basketball tournament

Kenya has been selected to host the highly anticipated Road to BAL Elite 16 basketball tournament, a landmark event for the country’s sports scene.

The tournament is scheduled from November 28 to December 3, 2024, at two premier venues: the Kasarani Indoor Arena and Nyayo Stadium.

This tournament serves as a critical stage in the Basketball Africa League (BAL), a professional league established through a groundbreaking partnership between the NBA and FIBA.

Kenya's selection as the host nation highlights its growing reputation for organizational excellence and enthusiasm for basketball.

Nairobi City Thunder, Kenya's representative team, will face formidable competition from elite teams across the continent.

The lineup includes City Oilers (Uganda), NBA Academy, Urunani BBC (Burundi), M.B.B (South Africa), Bravehearts Basketball (Zambia), Matero Magic (Malawi), and Fox Basketball Club (South Sudan).

“This is a monumental achievement for Kenya’s basketball community,” said Otula. “It’s not just about basketball; it’s about showcasing our resilience, talent, and ability to shine on the global stage.”

Beyond the court, the Road to BAL Elite 16 is expected to bring significant economic and social benefits, boosting local businesses, highlighting Kenya's capacity to host international events, and fostering community pride.

While the Federation has secured key venues, it is calling on stakeholders for additional support, including logistics, sponsorship, media partnerships, and volunteer engagement.

“We urge the government, private sector, and media to join us in making this event a resounding success,” Otula added. “Together, we can ensure it leaves a lasting legacy for Africa and the world.”
