Kenya U-21 hockey teams ready for Junior Africa Cup in Namibia

Kenya’s
national Under-21 men’s and women’s hockey teams are all set to compete in the
2024 Junior Africa Cup, which kicks off this Friday in Windhoek, Namibia.
Initially
scheduled for last year, the tournament doubles up as a qualification route to
the 2025 Junior World Cup in India.
Female
team head coach Rose Ochieng has expressed confidence in her squad’s
preparedness and cohesion ahead of the tournament.
“The
players have shown great consistency, and they’re responding positively to
training. They’re really making an effort to follow the instructions given. Our
coaching team is also working in harmony to ensure the girls reach the required
competitive standards,” said Coach Rose.
Vice-captain
of the men’s team, Charles Ashihundu, echoed similar optimism.
“Being
part of this team is an incredible feeling. Every player here understands the
honor that comes with representing the country,” he noted.
Ladies’
team deputy captain Marion Wekesa highlighted the strong team chemistry as a
major advantage.
“We’ve
built a great bond since August last year, and that connection is now showing
both on and off the pitch,” she said.
In the
men’s competition, Kenya has been drawn in Pool A alongside hosts Namibia,
South Africa, and Nigeria. Pool B features Egypt, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.
The
Kenyan men will begin their campaign on April 18 against Nigeria, followed by
South Africa on April 21, and will conclude the group stage with a clash
against Namibia on April 22.
On the
women’s side, Kenya will compete in Pool B with Zimbabwe and Zambia, following
Ghana’s withdrawal due to financial constraints.
Pool A
features South Africa, Namibia, and Uganda. The Kenyan ladies open their
campaign on April 21 against Zimbabwe and wrap up the group phase against
Zambia on April 22.
