Kenyan hockey needs more exposure for upswing, says KHU SG ongeri
The Kenya Hockey Union Secretary General Wycliffe
Ongori has called for more international matches to improve the quality of the hockey
national teams.
Kenyan teams put up solid efforts at the just
concluded Africa Cup of Nations (ACN) in Accra, Ghana despite having not played
competitive hockey for nearly two years.
The women’s team Tausi achieved a bronze finish with
their male counterparts Chui finishing fourth at the week-long continental
championships.
According to Ongori, KHU has identified areas to
improve in order to set up their squads for better showing in coming editions.
“We are going to hunt for new talents and improve on the
areas where we saw weaknesses. Now we know what to work on towards the
competition and part of that mission is to source for talents from the grassroots
level.
“I would like to congratulate our teams for the
splendid performances despite the challenges we experienced. Despite the walk
over for arriving late, our women still managed to reach the semis and
eventually won a medal,” Ongori said.
Hockey leagues in the country were suspended during
the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 and have not resumed since,
with only two tournaments played late last year in Mombasa.
