Kenyan teams lay down the marker at African Championship
Kenya Prisons,
KCB and Kenya Pipeline have thrown down the gauntlet at the 2022 African Women’s
Volleyball Clubs Championship following their resounding wins as the 33rd edition
served off Sunday in Kelibia, Tunisia.
The Kenyan representatives
made light work of their respective opponents in their opening fixtures by
winning in straight sets to send a huge statement of intent even as the chase
for the elusive title started in earnest.
KCB, under the
tutelage of Japheth Munala, were the first to come off the blocks hitting
Mimosa of Ivory Coast 25-13, 25-12 and 25-10 before local league champions
Prisons whitewashed Chief Naval of Nigeria 25-9, 25-18 and 25-20.
Pipeline, who
played later in the evening, edged out Customs of Nigeria in 25-19, 25-18 and
25-9 in their pool D opener as record champions Al Ahly of Egypt overcame Ghana’s
Al Wak earlier scare to win 3-1 sets.
Prisons, last Kenyan
team to win the annual championship in 2013 and last year’s bronze winners, are
in pool C that has Rwanda Patriotic Army of Rwanda, National Alcohol of
Ethiopia and Naval of Nigeria while KCB are in tough looking pool ‘B’ that also
has reigning champions Carthage of Tunisia and Ndejje University of Uganda.
Carthage
served off their title defence on flyer defeating Ndejje University 3-0 (25-16,
25-22, 25-15).
This is the second year in a row the championship which has attracted 16 teams is being hosted in Kelibia.
