Kenyan Women Premier League stays on pause as clubs boycott fixtures

Kenyan Women Premier League (KWPL) clubs maintained their stance of boycotting last weekend’s fixtures, with none of the six scheduled games on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 March 2026 taking place.

The boycott continues despite a direct plea from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) earlier this week urging clubs to keep the league rolling. The Clubs Leadership Caucus, however, remained firm, citing unresolved issues that have persisted for months.

The rebellion began last week when 11 out of the 12 teams in the premier division released a joint statement declaring a total boycott.

The clubs are protesting a range of issues, including the non-disbursement of FIFA Women Development funds, the absence of a league title sponsor, and a breakdown in communication with the FKF leadership.

The fixtures affected included on Saturday: Kibera Soccer Women vs Gideon Starlets at Marist Grounds, Kayole Starlets vs Ulinzi Starlets at Stima Grounds, Soccer Assassins vs Vihiga Queens at Nyang’ori Grounds, and Trinity vs Zetech Sparks at Comboni Grounds.

Sunday: Bungoma Queens vs Kismu All Starlets at Bungoma Polytechnic, and Kisped Queens vs Kenya Police Bullets at Mamboleo Stadium.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Kibera Soccer Women’s Richard Teka said the clubs will not return to the pitch unless the Federation addresses their concerns.

“We started calling for a meeting with the Federation on February 5, 2026 but many email were not responded to, that’s why we reached a decision as clubs to boycott last weekend fixtures. I’m wondering that after submitting a boycotting letter to them last week, they responded quickly."

"We have several issues that need to be addressed including the status of the promised sponsorship, the involvement of Women's Clubs in National team decisions, the Women’s FKF Cup, and the Women's League broadcast partner. They have called for a meeting on Tuesday, March 17 and we are looking forward for positive outcome failure to that the boycotts will stay.”

On his part, FKF Communication Liaison Jeff Kinyanjui expressed hope that the Tuesday meeting will pave the way forward for the league.

“We received the letter from the clubs last week and responded. The major issue for now is lack of sponsorship in running the league and it’s not in the Women League alone but other leagues. We are hoping that the meeting will be fruitful so that the league can continue,” said Kinyanjui.
