Kenyan wrestlers are racing against time to qualify for the 2026 African Wrestling Championships (U17, U20, and Seniors) scheduled for April 27 – May 2, 2026, in Alexandria, Egypt.

While the local league kicked off last weekend, majority of the wrestlers will be focused on making the cut for the global championships as they bid to gather enough experience from playing at elite level.

According to Secretary Kenya Amateur Wrestling Association General of the Eric Warucho the fledgling league has a tremendous upside should it receive adequate backing from the government.

"The league has been growing steadily, thanks to the emergence of talented young wrestlers, especially women.

“They're not only shining in the sport but also creating employment opportunities for themselves and others."

One such shining star is Jemimah Wanjala, an ambitiois pugilist who is ready to inspire the next generation of female boxers.

"Don't be afraid to try something new. Wrestling is a sport that builds confidence, discipline, and strength. Come join us and be part of this exciting journey!"

Meanwhile, reigning champion Joel Tukai is calling on the government to throw its weight behind the sport in a bid to bridge the gap with other well funded sports.

"We need support to take our skills to the next level. With the right backing, we can bring home medals and make Kenya proud."

With the African Championship on the horizon, all eyes are on Kenya's wrestlers as they prepare to take on the best of the continent.
