Kenya's Chepkogei places third in Cape Town Marathon, Xaba storms to title

South African long-distance runner Glenrose Xaba made a stunning debut at the Cape Town Marathon, shattering the national marathon record by over a minute on Sunday, October 20 2024.

Home girl Glenrose Xaba rewrote the national record books as she raced to a brilliant victory, in the process making her the fastest South African woman to ever run the 42.2km distance, covering the route in 2hr 22min 22sec.

Xaba not only tore Gerda Steyn’s previous national record mark of 2hr 24min 17sec set in Valencia last year to shreds, but she also broke the course record of Ethiopian Tsige Abreha (2:24.17) set in last year’s edition.

Resilient Chepkogei held on with the leading pack to finish third in 2 hours 22mins 49sec behind Xaba and former world champion Mare Dibaba of Ethiopia, who timed 2 hours 22 mins 36 secs to finish second.

Four Kenyan women placed among the top ten, proving the country’s strong presence in the marathon circuit.

In the men’s category, Ethiopians swept the podium with Edward Konana Koonyo placing fourth with a time of 2 hours 11mins 24 sec.

Abdisa Tola Adera won in 2:08:16, beating fellow Ethiopian and defending champion Adane Kebede Gebre by 16 seconds and Mitku Tafa Dekeba, who timed 2:10:10. Melikhaya Frans was the first South African home, in fifth with a time of 2:12:18.
