Kenya’s handball team has achieved a significant milestone in the Africa Beach Games after winning its first medal in the second edition of the tournament held in Hammamet, Tunisia.

The team secured a well-deserved silver medal after displaying outstanding skills and determination throughout the tournament.

Kenya emerged runners-up in the competition after narrowly losing 3-1 to Tunisia on shoot-out after a thrilling 1-1 draw in two sets.

The results demonstrated the team’s resilience and unwavering focus despite the pressure they received from a partisan crowd.

Following the match, skipper Michelle Adhiambo expressed her delight with the team’s performance which she said highlights their future success.

"The silver medal means so much to us because most of the players in the team are newcomers, and it is their first time at such a competition. For them to go back home with a medal means a lot, and it gives us the motivation to push even harder," Adhiambo said.

"This experience has given us a clear picture of where we stand as a team and has shown us that we can achieve even greater success. We came very close this time, and we will take the lessons learned from the championship to strive for excellence," she added.

In the match, Tunisia won the first set 24-19, capitalizing on marginal errors by the Kenyan girls at the tail end of the set. The Kenyan team, however, rectified their approach hence dominating the second set which they emerged victors with a score of 20-17.

In another match, Kenya’s men's handball team also achieved an impressive fifth-place finish in the tournament after defeating Mali in straight sets during the placement matches.

Their accomplishment represents a significant improvement from their ninth-place finish in the inaugural edition of the games held in Sal, Cape Verde, in 2019.

Victor Otuoma, team Kenya's flag bearer at the tournament, expressed his election with the team's performance and the tournament.

"As a team, we have made tremendous strides and improvements in every match. This achievement is a massive improvement from our last championship. We are delighted with our progress as a team and are determined to continue moving up," Otuoma said.
