KHU calls off Kiambu national hockey tournament
The Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Secretary General
Wycliffe Ongori has confirmed the Kiambu national hockey tournament that was
supposed to take place this weekend has been cancelled.
According to Ongori, the county association informed
KHU last week they won’t be able to host the tournament due to unavailability
of the playing grounds.
“We had been given the green light to organize the
tournament but the hosts later informed us via a letter that the tournament
won’t take place due to unavailability of playing fields. They had found three
pitches but now all are occupied,” Ongori said.
The KHU introduced the county tournaments early this
year as one way of nurturing grassroots talent.
The first county tournament took place in Kakamega
County in February this year where hosts Western Jaguars and women’s side
Lakers emerged winners.
The first legs of the country’s top three hockey
leagues ended last weekend, with the next leg commencing on May 7.
Ongori also hinted on friendly matches lined up
between the Revenue Authority of Ghana and a few clubs in the country over the
12 days league break.
“Over the long holiday, there is a club from Ghana that
is coming into the country. We shall be having friendly matches from Saturday
till Friday next week before they leave,” he added.
