KHU elections to be held on April 16
The Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) will hold its long-awaited
national elections on April 16, the federation Secretary General Wycliffe
Ongori has confirmed.
The elections were due earlier this month when the current
administration’s four-year mandate lapsed on January 17.
But the Sports Council allowed for them to extend that
term for the compelling reason that during that time officials were involved in
the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in Accra, Ghana where Kenya had two national
teams.
County Associations have been given the green light to
conduct their elections in February while the national elections will follow in
April, Ongori added.
“Our constitution allows us to reschedule the
elections if there is a compelling reason and, in that case, the Africa Cup of
Nations was the reason.
“To that extent, we had a roadmap to elections and we
had shared with the council which was approved on 8th January.
“The road map says, counties are allowed to conduct
their elections in February while the national elections to be conducted on
16th April,” Ongori said.
Pressure has been mounting with stakeholders including
current and former players accusing the current office of mismanaging the sport
and calling for change.
