KHU publishes league resumption dates

The Kenya hockey premier league will kick off on April 3, Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) has announced.

KHU suspended all its leagues in March last year following the confirmation of the first coronavirus case in the country.

A year later, KHU Secretary General Wycliffe Ongori said they are now ready to resume action with only the top flight league as the Super and Nationwide Leagues remain suspended.

While most sporting activities in the country have already resumed, Ongori said the nature of the sport and as the stringent protocols set by the ministry of sports led to their cautious approach to league resumption.

“We are not leaving anything to chance. We have decided to only focus on the tier one league in line with the ministry’s guidelines,” said Ongori.

Ongori revealed that the union has rolled out timelines leading to the resumption of the league beginning with a team manager’s meeting on Saturday.

At the same time, he also revealed that fans won’t be allowed in the stadium upon the resumption of the league.

With the City Park being the predominant stadium for the sport in the country, Ongori explained that the facility will host a maximum of four matches a week.

“We are looking at a situation where we can have two matches in a day over the weekend. We are also planning to have some matches out of the capital,” he said
