Julius Kipkwony from Baringo claimed victory in the men's 10,000m at the Kip Keino Classic meet on Saturday afternoon at Kasarani Stadium.

Kipkwony clocked 28:28.34 ahead of Wesley Kimutai (28:32.09) and Abraham Longosiwa (28:35.01) who finished second and third respectively.

"I did not expect to win in today's race since I was anticipating a very tough competition but I thank God I have emerged the winner. It is my hope that I will keep up this fine form ahead of major championships that are coming up," said Kipkwony.

In the women's 400m, Miranda Coetzee from South Africa emerged top in 51.50 ahead of Wadeline Jonathas of USA who finished second in 51.71 with Sussanne Walli settling for third in 52.13.

At the same time Jacob Krop made an astonishing finish in the last 200m to bag a hard-fought victory in the men's 5,000m race.

Krop clocked 13:12.19 as Daniel Mateiko finished second in 13:13.45 while Daniel Simiu came home third in 13:14.51

“I am happy to have retained my title; it was tough but I had prepared well. Though I didn't make the team for Africa Championships, I am hopeful I will represent Kenya at the World Championships in Oregon," said Kiprop.

On his part, Simiu who had won the national title a fortnight ago said he is now shifting his focus to the Africa Senior Athletics Championships to be held in Mauritius on June 8-12

"I have been at the Police Training College and also training. I am also training hard for the Africa Championships where I promise to win a gold medal for Kenya," said Simiu.

Simiu will also compete at the Prefontaine Classic on May 28.
