Double Olympic gold medallist Eliud Kipchoge and defending women's champion Peres Jepchirchir have made the final shortlist of six athletes for women and men’s marathon team to this year’s Paris Olympics.

Kipchoge, 39, was named alongside two-time Boston Marathon champion Benson Kipruto and newly-crowned London Marathon champion Alexander Mutiso, who was a late entrant into the provisional team following the death of Kelvin Kiptum.

2024 Tokyo Marathon runner-up Timothy Kiplagat was placed as reserve athlete while Vincent Kipkemboi was dropped.

Kipchoge is bidding to become the first athlete to win three Olympic marathon golds following his successes at Rio in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021.

Jepchirchir, who smashed the women-only world record by 45 seconds at the London Marathon last month by winning the race in 2:16:16, will lead Kenya's women cast that has reigning Boston Marathon champion and former world record holder Brigid Kosgei.

Boston Marathon runner-up Sharon Lokedi was selected as a reserve in the women’s side while former world champion Ruth Chepngetich and Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Rosemary Wanjiru were dropped.

The men’s marathon final has been scheduled among 39 gold medal events on Saturday, August 10 while the women’s marathon final has been scheduled on the final day of the Olympics, Sunday, August 11, 2024.
