Norway’s Amalie Luel stole the thunder in the women’s 400m hurdles at the sixth Kip Keino Classic, held Saturday in Nairobi, storming to a new meet record of 54.80 seconds at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
Running from lane five, the 31-year-old timed her strides to
perfection and surged in the final stretch to eclipse the previous mark,
showing signs of top form ahead of the championship season.
“This track felt fast and the crowd gave me energy,” said a
delighted Luel. “It’s special to leave my mark on such a big African stage.”
The race was packed with personal milestones. Finland’s
Kristiina Halonen chopped her Personal Best down to 55.32, finishing second and
improving her season best by over a second. Germany’s Eileen Demes settled for
third in 55.38, while American Bianca Stubler posted a lifetime best of 55.48.
Slovakia’s Daniela Ledecká also impressed with a season-best
55.97, while Norway’s Line Kloster, a sub-54 specialist, crossed in 56.46—a
sign she’s still regaining top gear.
Veteran Elisabeth Slettum, also from Norway, and American
Jessica Wright rounded out the field in 57.47 and 58.98 respectively.
