Kisii County top guns eye Lake Region glory

As the dust settles after the Kisii County Secondary Schools Association Term two games that took place in Nyamache and Kenyenya, focus now turns to the Lake Region games slated for Kisumu Boys from 18 to 22 June.

There were routine triumphs in St Charles Lwanga Gesero Secondary School who defended both boys’ and girls’ crowns for the fourth consecutive year and Mogonga Secondary who defended their netball title, thereby underlining their dominance in the championship.

However, this unparalleled dominance for both teams is ‘no fluke’.

Gesero head coach Evans Akanga intimated to Citizen Digital that their half-a-decade long supremacy is as a result of an exceptional scouting program that sees the school admit big-hitters right from primary school.

Also, the school invests heavily in equipment and training programs.

“We invest a lot in the games department. Apart from scouting, the school dedicates resources towards installing the right equipment for the players to train and be ready.”

Having reigned supreme in the county level, their attention is now fully focused on claiming the Lake region crown with Mr. Akanga focused on sharpening the team’s attack as the regional level presents a tougher challenge.

“Even if we have won this county crown, I feel that our striking department needs to get sharpened. Our training between now and next week will be about finishing off our chances in the game. That is the only way we are going to survive,” he reckoned.

After triumphing in the girls’ football under-16 level for the first time, Riyabu ELCK Secondary School coach Gilbert Magoma says they have embarked on a rigorous training program ahead of the regional games.

He has highlighted Kobala Girls as their toughest opponents in Pool A.

“I know that the regional levels will be harder so we have to prepare well. Kobala Girls are a seasoned team that has done well in both the regional and national games previously.”

“We also face Sironga from Nyamira County who are a good team. We believe we will do well if we train harder.”

Little known newbies Omwari Girls sent shock waves in the volleyball World after they floored seasoned behemoths Sengera SDA to announce their arrival in the big-time showpiece.

Such an achievement must have made them believe they can reap big in next week’s Nyanza region championships.

Mogonga PAG Secondary School also proved invincible overpowering Sengera SDA Boys for the third consecutive year and will look to prevail in the regional games yet again.

County giants like Mobamba and Omwari Girls will also be gunning for glory in the lake region games.
