Kwanthanze Girls and Koyonzo Boys  won  SOYA Girls and Boys School Team of the Year Awards staged on Friday night at Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.

The two schools were feted following an incredible year in the national  inter-school championships staged in August in Kakamega County.

Kwanthanze Secondary School overcame the national heartache to retain their East Africa volleyball girl’s crown defeating familiar foes Kesogon Secondary School 3-2 sets in the final to win their fifth successive regional title in August.

Kesogon had gotten off the canvas to lift Kwanthanze off their feet winning 25-19, 15-25, 22-25, 25-21  putting the brakes on African champions who had sailed to the national finals without dropping any set.

Koyonzo Boys on the other hand also had a scintillating year sweeping both the national and the East African titles.

The Eliud Okwemba's charges defended their national title after thumping regional rivals Vihiga high school 22-12 on their very second national attempt.

They then completed a double against them after a 21-0 thrashing at the East African stage to win their maiden title.

Namwela Boys' volleyball coach Isaac Muresia also walked away with the SOYA School Coach of the Year Award after guiding the school to win their maiden East Africa volleyball title last year.

Namwela shook off their national upset to stun Uganda’s Namugongo Vocational School 3-1 to bag the regional title.

Interestingly, they had finished third in the nationals behind Ruthimitu Mixed Secondary School and Andersen Secondary School.
