Despite winning against Strathmore on Sunday in the Kenya
women’s basketball premier league match, Equity Hawks head coach David Maina
has called upon his players to improve on how they start their games, noting
that they need better momentum.
Equity hammered Strathmore Swords 63-32 in their last game of the regular season in a match played at Strathmore Grounds to finish second on 41 points, from the regular season, after winning 19 matches and losing three.
“We started badly in the first half because by halftime we
were down but we knew we were not playing well so in the second half we
improved and were able to win convincingly,” he said. “Going to the playoffs
means there is no time for lapses. I think we need to up our game because not
all games we shall be able to pick up in the second half,” he explained, adding
that, “We have to start the way we finished in our Sunday’s game which is very
important to every player who will be given a chance to play during the
playoffs,” Maina said.
Silalei Shani masterminded Equity’s win as she netted 15
points followed by the experienced Betty Kananu who had 12 as Captain Mellissa
Akinyi dropped 10.
At the same time Zetech Sparks head coach Maurice Obilo was
impressed with his girls’ performance despite winning one and losing the other.
The students lost 44-52 to defending champions Kenya Ports
Authority (KPA) on Saturday before defeating Storms 60-37 on Sunday.
“My students played well despite the fact that they were on
exams for two weeks and the school has closed. It was a good show and a very
good build up for next weekend if we are going to start the playoffs,” Obilo
said.
Defending champions KPA finished the regular season with an
unbeaten record as they won all their 22 matches.
