KPA floor GBV, sail to Club Championship quarters, Prisons inch closer
Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) sailed to the quarter finals of
the African men's volleyball club championship after spanking hapless Green
Buffaloes Volleyball Club (GBV) from Zambia in straight sets at the Cairo
Stadium Indoor Arena.
The Dockers showed their intent in the first set when they
thumped (GBV) 25-18 before a 25-16 and 25-12 demolition in the subsequent sets
to storm the quarters.
The Joash Ontere led side is now penciled to meet DR Congo's
Volleyball Club Garde Republicaine (CGR) in their final clash of Pool D;
victory will put them on the cusp of a maiden African title.
KPA finished sixth in the last year's edition held in Tunis,
Tunisia.
At the same venue, Kenyan counterparts Kenya Prisons had to
dig dip before dispatching Burundi's Rukinzo Volleyball Club 3-2 in a five set
thriller, moving a step closer to the knockout stage.
Kenya Prisons were put to sword in a scintillating first
set, losing 24-26 before reclaiming their mojo to win the second and third sets
25-17 and 25-15 respectively.
And with a set to play, the local reigning champions
produced a stinker in the fourth set, losing 25-17 to revive Rukinzo's hopes of
winning the tie.
The fifth set produced fireworks as both sides eyed the
important two points. However, it was Prisons who had the last laugh, whitewashing
25-12 in a pulsating clash.
The Dennis Mokua led charges now face a litmus test against
Algeria's ASW Blida Sport Ville De Blida on Wednesday in a must win match that
will see them storm quarter finals.
