Newly promoted Spanish LaLiga club Girona has reached an agreement with Guizhou Zhicheng of the Chinese Super League for the transfer of Kenyan international Michael Olunga.

Girona, who claimed their first ever top-flight win thanks to their 1-0 home victory over Malaga on the opening day of the season, made the announcement on Friday, hours before the Spanish transfer window slammed shut.

Olunga who moved to the CSL after spending just one season at Swedish club Djurgaden has been in Spain to complete the loan move after skipping international duty with the national team Harambee Stars.

In the latter stages of his China spell, Olunga played a bit-part role for Zhicheng with former Hull City striker Nikica Jelavic preferred upfront and the former Gor Mahia ace relegated to training with the reserve squad.

Olunga’s Kenyan Premier League (KPL) career took him to Tusker FC, Thika United and Gor where he led them to clinching an unprecedented third successive league title in his final season.

The Liberty Sport Academy graduate made global headlines when a video emerged of him sending a transfer request to Arsene Wenger while claiming to be the best striker in the land.

His Arsenal wish remained just that but he still made a leap to Europe as Djurgaden came calling, paying a reported KSh400 million to acquire the services of the 23-year-old. The fee remains a domestic transfer record.

Olunga was nominated for New Player of the Year but finished first runner-up after a fulfilling debut season at the Swedish Allsvenskan where he scored 12 goals in 27 matches.

His exploits saw him linked to several big money moves away from Sweden before he was captured by Zhicheng.

Olunga has been capped 23 times for the national team, scoring an impressive 14 goals in the process.
